Trip Details

Each summer, just off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, hundreds of whale sharks gather to feed on plankton-rich waters – making Isla Mujeres one of the best launch locations in the world to swim with these massive, yet gentle creatures. With their mouths wide open and bodies gliding just beneath the surface, whale sharks are not only awe-inspiring but surprisingly accessible to snorkelers.

On this 5-day women-only whale shark tour, our small group of women will have two dedicated days on the water to swim with whale sharks, led by experienced, conservation-focused guides. No two days on the water are the same, and we hope each day brings exceptional conditions and sightings. In between, you’ll have time to explore the colorful, laid-back island of Isla Mujeres – from snorkeling at the nearby underwater sculpture museum to relaxing on the powdery sands of Playa Norte. With comfortable, oceanfront accommodations at Playa La Media Luna and the Caribbean’s turquoise waters all around you, this trip strikes the perfect balance between adrenaline-pumping encounters and beachside leisure.

Designed for women only adventure travel, this trip is ideal for nature lovers, ocean enthusiasts, and anyone who’s dreamed of coming face to face with the ocean’s largest (and docile) fish.

Your Guide on the Whale Shark Tour in Mexico

Naara Arroyo

Naara Arroyo

Naara Arroyo is a naturalist guide with a deep love for wildlife, movement, and mystery. Born in Mexico City and now based in Playa del Carmen, she studied linguistics before following her heart into the wild. Naara has always felt nature as something alive and sacred, especially in moments like standing among monarch butterflies, which she describes as spiritual. Her guiding style blends empathy, adventure, and quiet observation, and she’s especially drawn to jaguars and other felines. Physically skilled and always in motion, Naara swims in cenotes, practices yoga, and trains in aerial dance. Her go-to field snacks are chocolate and fruit, and after a long day outside, she craves hot soup. If she weren’t guiding, she’d be performing on stage or exploring new ways to connect through art and movement. Whether in the forest or floating beside whale sharks, she finds joy in sharing the quiet magic of the natural world.

Getting There and Meeting Location

This expedition begins and ends in Cancún. You will arrange your own flights to Cancún International Airport (CUN), where Her Wild Life will coordinate your ground and ferry transfers to Isla Mujeres on arrival day. From that point on, all transportation between Cancún, the ferry terminal, and your hotel at Playa La Media Luna is included and guided. On departure day, transfers back to Cancún for your flight home are included as listed.

Safety Measures and Insurance

Your safety and comfort are at the heart of every Her Wild Life expedition. Our trips are women-led and created specifically for women, fostering a supportive, welcoming atmosphere from the moment you arrive in Cancún. Group sizes are intentionally small, so your guide can offer personal attention while safely navigating early morning departures, open ocean conditions, and time in the water with whale sharks. Life jackets or wetsuits are required for all in-water encounters, and your naturalist guide is in the water alongside you throughout every excursion. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, interruption, medical emergencies, and evacuation.

Deposits and Cancellation Policy

To reserve your spot on the Swimming with Whale Sharks expedition, a 20% deposit is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure.

Cancellations made 121 or more days before the trip are subject to a $250 fee. Cancellations made 44 days or fewer before departure are non-refundable.

FAQs About Mexico Whale Shark Tours for Women

What months can you swim with whale sharks in Mexico?

Whale sharks are present in Mexican waters from late May through September, with peak season running from June through August. During these months, plankton blooms in the warm Caribbean waters off the Yucatán Peninsula draw hundreds of whale sharks to the surface, creating ideal conditions for swimming with whale sharks in Mexico. Her Wild Life’s whale shark excursions depart in early August, placing you at Isla Mujeres during a reliably active part of the season when large concentrations are still present, and ocean conditions are typically calm.

Where is the best place to swim with whale sharks in Mexico?

The waters around Isla Mujeres, off the northeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, are consistently considered the best place to swim with whale sharks in Mexico. The area known locally as the Afuera sits above one of the largest seasonal plankton concentrations in the world, which is what draws the sharks in such extraordinary numbers each summer. In 2009, a single aerial survey at the Afuera site recorded 420 whale sharks feeding in one stretch of water, the largest aggregation ever documented. Holbox, further west along the Yucatán coast, is another well-known departure point, but Isla Mujeres offers easier access to the primary aggregation zone. Tours head approximately 25 miles offshore to reach the sharks at their feeding grounds in open water. For full timing detail, read when are whale sharks in Mexico.

What gear do I need for a whale shark tour in Mexico?

The essentials are minimal, and most of what you need will be provided or is straightforward to bring. You will need a snorkel, mask, and fins, which can be rented locally if you do not own them. A life jacket or wetsuit for added buoyancy is required for all in-water encounters on Her Wild Life’s excursions, and these are provided on the boat. You should also bring reef-safe sunscreen (standard sunscreen is prohibited to protect marine life in Mexican protected waters), a rash guard or lightweight wetsuit top for sun protection, a hat and sunglasses for the boat ride out, and motion sickness remedies if you are sensitive to ocean swells. For a full packing overview, see our guide on what to pack for a wildlife trip as a woman.

What safety measures do companies provide for whale shark swimming in Mexico?

Responsible whale shark tour operators in Mexico work under government-issued permits and follow regulations designed to protect both the animals and swimmers. On Her Wild Life’s private charter excursions, groups enter the water in small numbers at a time with a trained naturalist guide alongside you. Life jackets or wetsuits are required for buoyancy, and clear guidelines on maintaining safe distances from the sharks are briefed before every entry. Respectful managed encounters protect whale sharks’ natural feeding behavior and keep the experience calm and unhurried. Our conservation donation supports the Marine Megafauna Foundation, which conducts ongoing research into whale shark populations and responsible viewing standards.

Is swimming with whale sharks in Mexico safe?

Yes. Whale sharks are the largest fish on Earth and one of the most docile. They are filter feeders with no predatory behavior toward humans. Their diet is plankton, fish eggs, krill, and tiny marine organisms, and they have no interest in swimmers beyond occasionally drifting past them. The main safety considerations on any whale shark excursion are practical ones: open water comfort, sun exposure, and the possibility of choppy seas on the boat ride out. Her Wild Life’s private charter tours operate with trained guides in the water, mandatory buoyancy equipment, and small group entries to keep encounters calm and controlled. For a fuller picture of their biology and behavior, read are whale sharks dangerous?

Do you need to know how to scuba dive to swim with whale sharks in Mexico?

No scuba diving experience or certification is required. All encounters take place at the surface. Whale sharks feed by swimming slowly with their mouths open near the top of the water, which means snorkeling is all you need. What matters more than any formal qualification is being comfortable swimming in open ocean water and confident with a snorkel and mask. Women who have never snorkeled before join these trips regularly, and your guide manages all positioning relative to the animal throughout. If you have not snorkeled before, a shallow water practice session before your excursion day is worth considering.

How big are the whale sharks you swim with in Mexico?

The whale sharks that gather off Isla Mujeres each summer are mostly juveniles and subadults, typically between 5 and 10 metres in length. Occasionally, larger adults are present. To put that in perspective, most adults of this species average around 12 metres and weigh approximately 15 tons, roughly the length of a school bus. Swimming alongside one at the surface, with its unique spotted pattern visible in clear Caribbean water and its tail moving slowly just ahead of you, is a scale of encounter that is difficult to describe before you have experienced it. For full size context and what it actually feels like in the water, read how big are whale sharks?

Are these Mexico whale shark excursions suitable for solo female travelers?

Yes, and most women on Her Wild Life departures arrive on their own. The trip is structured so that solo travelers are never navigating independently. Airport transfers from Cancún are included on arrival and departure days, all four nights are at Playa La Media Luna with a private room included in the trip cost, and the group of 6 to 9 women travels together throughout. The shared experience of swimming with whale sharks tends to dissolve any first-day unfamiliarity quickly. If you are planning your first solo wildlife trip, Her Wild Life offers solo trips for women in the US and internationally, all built around the same principle: you arrive alone, you do not feel it for long.

How fit do I need to be for a whale shark swimming trip?

A moderate level of comfort in the water is the main requirement rather than general fitness. You need to be a confident swimmer and comfortable snorkeling in open ocean conditions. The excursion days involve boat travel of approximately 25 miles offshore and time in the water swimming alongside the sharks at the surface. Beyond the water activity, the trip involves relaxed island exploration at your own pace on Day 3, with no strenuous hiking or demanding terrain. If you are comfortable in the sea and able to spend a full day on a boat, you are well prepared. Her Wild Life offers adventure travel for women across a range of activity levels, from gentle prairie birding to open water wildlife encounters.

What is the group size on Her Wild Life's whale shark tours in Mexico?

The trip limit is 6 to 9 women, keeping the group small enough for personal attention in the water and a genuine sense of camaraderie across the five days. Her Wild Life’s whale shark excursions run as private charters, meaning your group has the boat to itself on both excursion days. Private rooms are included for every participant at no single supplement. For everything you need to know about these animals before departure, read whale shark facts and what to expect before you swim with one.

Conservation Impact

The Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) is an international nonprofit dedicated to researching and conserving the world’s most endangered large marine species, including whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and dugongs. Since its founding in 2003, MMF has combined scientific discovery with community partnerships to promote ocean health and protect marine biodiversity. By working with governments, businesses, and local communities, MMF fosters sustainable solutions that safeguard these majestic ocean giants and their habitats.
