Trip Details
Join Her Wild Life Expeditions for a magical springtime prairie tour in Nebraska, timed to one of nature’s most extraordinary migrations.
Each March, more than half a million sandhill cranes gather along Nebraska’s Platte River to rest and refuel on their way north. Jane Goodall has called it “without a doubt one of the most spectacular events in the natural world.” The sight—and sound—of this ancient migration is truly unforgettable, and you’ll have front-row seats.
Beyond the cranes, we’ll search for other iconic grassland species, from greater prairie-chickens performing their booming dawn displays to singing meadowlarks, all under the guidance of expert naturalist Carly Crow. Along the way, we’ll explore the essential role grassland ecosystems play and the vital conservation work underway to protect them.
Our tours in Nebraska are designed to slow down and tune in to nature, to place, and to the joy of spring’s return. With cozy accommodations, small-group camaraderie, and expertly guided experiences, Spring Magic in Nebraska is your chance to witness one of the world’s great wildlife events—and support conservation efforts that make a difference.

Your Guide on Birding Tours in Nebraska
Carly Crow
Meet Carly Crow, your naturalist guide with a passion for wildlife and a deep desire to share the wonders of nature with others. Originally from Georgia and now based in Denver, Colorado, she holds a Bachelor of Science in ecology and a master’s in biology, with a focus on ecology and evolution. Her time as a field ornithologist has taken her around the world—including to the wilds of Costa Rica—and now she’s bringing that experience to you as a Her Wild Life Expeditions guide. Though she’s often asked about her favorite bird or mammal, Carly believes that’s a forbidden question—like asking a parent to pick a favorite child! When she’s not guiding or chasing birds, you can find her drawing, hiking in the Rockies, or curled up with a book. If she won the lottery, she’d buy some land to keep chickens and bees and run a roadside stand selling eggs and honey.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fit do I need to be for the Spring Magic in Nebraska trip?
You only need a moderate level of fitness for this expedition. The birding tours in Nebraska for women focus on immersive wildlife experiences and gentle activity, making it a great option for women who enjoy full but not overly strenuous days outdoors. Expect relaxed walks of up to about a mile on mostly flat terrain, some uneven natural surfaces, early mornings (especially for the greater prairie-chicken lek), and periods of standing while birding and in viewing blinds. You’ll also need to comfortably step in and out of a lifted 4WD passenger van using a provided stool. If you’re happy being outside for most of the day with light walking and early starts, you’ll be well prepared.
What do I need to bring for Nebraska wildlife and birding tours?
You’ll want to pack warm, versatile layers and comfortable walking gear, as March on the Great Plains can bring anything from frosty mornings to cool, breezy afternoons. Essential items include:
- Warm base layers and an insulating jacket
- Hat, gloves, and a neck gaiter or scarf
- Sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots
- A small daypack for water, snacks, and extra layers
- Binoculars (highly recommended for crane and prairie-chicken viewing)
A detailed packing list will be shared after booking, but dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable throughout your Spring Magic in Nebraska adventure.
What is the weather like in Nebraska in March?
March on Nebraska’s plains is classic early spring: variable, beautiful, and often brisk. You can expect cold, crisp mornings, especially at sunrise along the Platte River and during the prairie-chicken lek, with temperatures that may dip near or below freezing.
Daytime conditions are typically cool, with the possibility of wind, lingering winter chill, or mild sunshine. Light snow or rain is possible, particularly at the start of the season. Because we’ll spend time in unheated bird blinds and out in open landscapes, warm, layered clothing is essential for all Nebraska wildlife tours.
What are the group sizes and age requirements for this Nebraska adventure trip?
Groups for Spring Magic in Nebraska are intentionally small and women-only, with a limit of 5–7 participants. This intimate size allows for personalised attention, a strong sense of camaraderie, and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. The trip is designed for adult women, with no strict upper age limit. As long as you’re comfortable with gentle walks, early mornings, time in bird blinds, and full but not strenuous days in the field, you’ll fit right in.
Conservation Impact
Southern Plains Land Trust is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to protecting and rewilding the Southern Plains through the creation of a network of prairie refuges. Since its founding, the organization has permanently protected more than 60,000 acres of shortgrass prairie, providing critical habitat for native plants and animals. As part of our tours in Nebraska for women, a conservation donation to support the Southern Plains Land Trust’s efforts will be made on behalf of all trip participants.
